WORLD AIDS DAY COMMEMORTATED WITH THE FIRST LADY

DIREKT FRÅN ZAMBIA The Chibombo offices of Plan Zambia and Planned Parenthood Association of Zambia (PPAZ) joined the international community in commemorating the World AIDS Day (WAD) on 1st December, 2012. This year’s WAD event, organized by a committee including both organizations, was particularly special because it was graced by the First Lady of the Republic of Zambia, Dr. Christine Kaseba. The First Lady has championed a number of Zambian and international campaigns, such as the fight against cervical cancer, gender based violence (GBV), and HIV and AIDS. In her speech, the First Lady encouraged young people to contribute to the fight against HIV and AIDS and stop the transmission of the infection by practicing safer sex. She also discussed the importance of combating GBV and explained its relationship to the HIV pandemic.

At the event, Plan and PPAZ shared and distributed information, education, and communication (IEC) materials at an information desk. Eleven peer educators conducted one-to-one counselling and passed out condoms while 17 drama group members performed sensitization skits.

The night before the event Plan and PPAZ participated in a candlelight service along with church leaders.
